Meet the Bailey family

Serina and Larry Bailey have been on a heart-breaking pregnancy journey — although very difficult, they finally have their happy ending. The couple is from Panama City, FL where they endured two miscarriages. Frustrated and feeling a lack of compassion and understanding locally, they decided to travel to Tallahassee, where they selected Shawn Ramsey, DO, of HCA Florida Capital Women’s Health as their physician.

The Bailey’s said, “After consulting with Dr. Ramsey, we agreed to have a Transabdominal Cerclage performed, also known as a TAC.” A TAC is a small, extremely strong, woven synthetic band stitched high on the cervix. This band supports the full length of the cervix and resists the pressure the growing fetus places on it. The band prevents the cervix from opening and losing the pregnancy. In July 2022, Dr. Ramsey performed the procedure laparoscopically with the use of a surgical robot.

In Sept. 2022, to their delight, the Bailey’s got pregnant. The couple went on to say, “After the successful surgery, Dr. Ramsey made the process so easy, while being very sympathetic to the emotions we displayed over our pregnancy losses and his hands-on approach, we decided we wanted to stay with him throughout our pregnancy. He was with us during the entire journey — from surgery, delivery, post-partum, and eventually a NICU stay.”

At 28 weeks and three days gestation, Serina had to deliver the baby via emergency c-section because she developed HELLP Syndrome, which stands for Hemolysis, Elevated Liver Enzymes and Low Platelets. This syndrome is a life-threatening pregnancy complication usually considered to be a variant of preeclampsia.

Serina says, “When my blood pressure shot up uncontrollably on a Friday evening, we immediately traveled to Tallahassee to have our baby. What made the experience so amazing, was the team of doctors and nurses that were standing by for our arrival. They were so sweet, caring, and efficient. They treated us as if we were family. They made us feel more than just a number.” Dr. Ramsey was on vacation and so his partner at HCA Florida Capital Women’s Health, Miles Byrd, MD, stepped-in and performed the c-section.

Baby Trinity was born weighing 2 lbs. and 5 oz. and needed the care of a NICU. Larry says, “The level of care we received during our daughter’s 54-day NICU stay was nothing short of amazing. From all of the doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, caseworkers, nutritionists, lactation specialists and housekeeping staff — it was hands-down the best experience we have ever had in a medical setting. The compassion, understanding, education, and great customer service was truly incredible. This was one of the hardest times in our lives and they made it such a positive and beautiful experience.”

“We truly want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts, to Dr. Ramsey and Dr. Byrd. They kept their promise of ensuring that we would go home with a healthy baby! They always listened to our concerns, emotionally and physically. But most importantly, we are grateful that they were there for us every week through the entire seven-month pregnancy journey,” said the Bailey’s. “We could go on and on about the amazing service we received in Labor and Delivery and the NICU as well. When we left the NICU for the first time, we knew that our daughter Trinity was going to be left in great hands. The care team treated our daughter like their own child. We so appreciative of the messages about her progress and the camera system app that allowed us to see Trinity 24/7. We highly recommend HCA Florida Capital Hospital!”
