Diagnosing skin cancer
Using advanced diagnostic procedures, our oncologists can determine which type of skin cancer you may have, pinpoint its precise location and also determine the extent to which it has spread. Our experts may use one or more of the following

Biopsy
Imaging tests
We use a variety of diagnostic imaging tests, such as computerized tomography (CT), X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to see if the suspected cancer has spread.
Skin examination
During a skin examination, which may be routine or as a result of a new growth, the doctor will look at the growth to view the size, shape, color and texture of the suspicious spot. Often, a special microscope or magnifying lens may be used to view it more carefully.
Treatment options for skin cancers
There are many different options to treat skin cancer, some of which may include:
- Cryotherapy — Cryotherapy involves freezing and destroying the cancerous tissue.
- Dermabrasion — During dermabrasion, your doctor will use an abrasive device to rub away the cancerous cells.
- Radiation therapy — Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays to kill the cancer cells and prevent further growth or spread.
- Surgery — During surgery, your doctor will remove the growth and any other affected cells.
Preventive skin care
Our doctors know that preventive medicine is the best defense against skin cancer. According to the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are many ways to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, including wearing sunscreen and avoiding excessive sun exposure.
Additionally, routine screenings from your primary care doctor or dermatologist can help detect skin cancer early, when it is more treatable. You can also perform routine screenings at home, keeping a lookout for any growths or marks that are:
- Changing in shape, size or color
- Irregularly shaped (not round or mostly round)
- Larger than 1/4 inch in size
- New growths
