Gastrointestinal cancer

Gastrointestinal cancers affect the digestive system. These can include esophageal, stomach, colon, rectal and pancreatic cancers.

Gastrointestinal (GI) oncology in Florida

When it comes to GI cancer treatment, you only want the best.

At HCA Florida Physicians — a network of physician practices across the state — we offer access to dedicated physicians ready to give their best in the fight against cancer. Our gastric oncologists specialize in treating cancers of the GI tract — including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus. Immediately after a diagnosis, our doctors get to work creating an effective treatment plan to provide you with the best possible outcome.

GI cancers we treat

Our gastroenterologists and oncologists treat many cancers of the GI tract, including:

  • Anal cancer
  • Bile duct cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Gallbladder cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Rectal cancer
  • Small intestine cancer
  • Stomach cancer

GI cancer treatments we offer

When creating your treatment plan, our doctors will partner with you to outline a plan that is both effective and fits your needs as an individual.

Some of the treatments we offer include:

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy is used to shrink or destroy a tumor. During radiation therapy, beams of energy — or radioactive particles — are aimed directly at the tumor. Because of this, more surrounding tissue remains unharmed.

Surgery for GI cancer

Your doctor may suggest surgery as an option to treat GI cancer. Some surgeries aim at removing only the tumor, where others may remove parts of the GI tract to reduce the risk of cancer returning.

One example of this is a gastrectomy. During a partial gastrectomy, your surgeon will only remove part (usually the lower portion) of the stomach. During a full gastrectomy, your surgeon will remove the entire stomach.

Our GI cancer specialists

GI cancer may produce symptoms that resemble common, low-risk gastrointestinal conditions. Because of this, it is often diagnosed or initially recognized by one of our GI doctors — making them our first line of defense.

Once a diagnosis has been made, you will likely be referred to one of our GI cancer specialists. These specialists have extensive experience with all types of GI cancer. They will partner with the other cancer specialists and medical professionals in our network to provide comprehensive care.

Together, our doctors make up a highly trained and experienced team of individuals, ready to help you in the fight against cancer.
